Dopo anni di rodaggio, di film e contenuti originali, di collaborazioni con registi acclamati come Alfonso Cuarón e Martin Scorsese, Netflix ha ottenuto 24 nomination all’Oscar lunedì, più di qualsiasi altro studio cinematografico facente parte della concorrenza. Il gigante dello streaming ha fatto molta strada dal 2014, quando ha ottenuto la sua prima nomination all’Oscar per il documentario “The Square”.
Netflix ha fatto passi da gigante l’anno scorso con 15 nomination, tra le quali ricordiamo”Roma” di Cuarón, per il quale il New York Times ha speso fino a 20 milioni di dollari per la sua campagna Oscar. Il film, alla fine, ha portato a casa tre trofei, ma ha perso il premio più importante della serata a favore di “Green Book”.
Con ben due film in lizza per “Miglior film”, le possibilità di Netflix di ottenere l’ambito premio sono molto alte. Ma anche se non dovesse vincere, la sua ascesa da una sola nomination nel 2014 a 24 nomination dopo sei anni, vale bene una vittoria. Una rivincita verso chi ha sempre criticato il servizio streaming perché non considerato alla pari del vero Cinema, con la C maiuscola.
Una grossa fetta di questo successo può essere attribuita al vice presidente del cinema di Netflix. Scott Stuber è entarto a far parte del team nel 2017; nello stesso anno, Netflix ha vinto il suo primo Oscar per il miglior cortometraggio documentario “The White Helmets”. Un anno dopo, ha vinto l’Oscar per il miglior documentario “Icarus”. E anche quest’anno è in lizza per quel premio – due volte – sia per “American Factory” che per “The Edge of Democracy”.
